Why this matters

The founders of Twitter and Pinterest are launching a new app aimed at changing how people interact online, signaling continued evolution in social media design.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone and Pinterest co-founder Evan Sharp have raised $29 million for their startup West Co., according to regulatory filings and company statements reviewed by the Financial Times.

The seed round was led by venture capital firm Spark Capital.

West Co., led by Sharp as CEO, launched an invite-only version of its first app, Tangle, in November. The app asks users, “What’s your intention for today?” and is designed to let users share daily goals with friends in an effort to reflect on their lives with more purpose.

Sharp described the project as stemming from the question, “What could I build that might help address just some of the terrible devastation of the human mind and heart that we’ve wrought the last 15 years?”

Stone said the app could change significantly before a broader public release.
