Summary

Officials said two people were critically injured after a man fired into traffic near Harvard University in Cambridge.

Why this matters

The shooting disrupted a busy area near Harvard University and left two people critically injured. Officials said there was no ongoing threat, but the case may affect travel in the area and raises public safety concerns.

Two people were shot and suffered life-threatening injuries after a man opened fire into traffic in Cambridge on Monday afternoon near Harvard University, officials said.

The shooting happened near Memorial Drive and River Street before 1:30 p.m., Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said at a briefing.

Ryan said the gunman, armed with an assault-style rifle, was “actively firing in an erratic fashion at various vehicles.”

A state trooper and a civilian identified by Ryan as a former Marine fired their weapons and struck the gunman, later identified as Tyler Brown, multiple times. Brown was arrested and hospitalized, Ryan said.

Brown will face two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, weapons possession charges, and other charges, Ryan said. He was under probation supervision for a previous crime, according to the district attorney.

Aerial video from ABC affiliate WCVB showed police taking the gunman into custody at the scene. WCVB footage also showed a black Dodge sedan off the side of the road after an apparent crash, and a rifle on the grass nearby.
