CBP seizes $8.1M meth hidden in tile shipment

Summary

Customs and Border Protection said officers found 908.30 pounds of meth hidden in tile on a commercial truck last Tuesday.

Why this matters

The seizure shows how drug smuggling attempts can be concealed in routine commercial shipments. It also reflects how federal officials are framing border enforcement and narcotics interdiction efforts.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said officers seized 908.30 pounds of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of $8,119,696, during a commercial truck inspection last Tuesday.

The agency said the drugs were hidden in a shipment of tile. Officers were first alerted during a canine unit screening and, after a closer inspection, found 200 packages of white powder inside pallets of tile.

“As this significant seizure aptly illustrates, CBP officers work tirelessly to ensure that commerce flows and hard narcotics are stopped in their tracks,” Port Director Carlos Rodriguez said in a statement.

In February, the agency said it detained a truckload of “roses” that concealed more than 515 pounds of cocaine.

On April 2, Customs and Border Protection reported seizing 298 pounds of cocaine, worth about $2.6 million, in a commercial truck that was allegedly carrying carrots.

Two weeks later, the agency said it stopped 1,002 pounds of cocaine, worth as much as $8.9 million, in a shipment of chayote, a squash native to Mexico.
