A federal judge blocked a Trump administration policy restricting reporters’ access to the Pentagon. U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman ruled that the policy unlawfully limited journalists’ press credentials and violated their First and Fifth Amendment rights. The New York Times sued the Pentagon and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, challenging the policy’s constitutionality.
The ruling comes after most current Pentagon press corps, consisting mainly of conservative outlets, agreed to the new rules. Meanwhile, reporters from organizations like The Associated Press, which did not consent, have continued their reporting from a distance. Although allowed into some briefings, these journalists faced restricted access.
The Pentagon plans to appeal, noting the rules are intended to protect national security by barring security risks from Pentagon access. However, The Times and its attorneys argue the policy aimed to restrict unfavorable coverage of Trump’s administration.
The Pentagon was given one week to report on compliance with the order, and the judge denied a request for delaying the ruling.
