Louisiana shooting kills 8 children, wounds 2

Summary

Police said a man killed eight children, including seven of his own, in a domestic violence shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Why this matters

The shooting was among the deadliest mass killings in the U.S. in more than two years and underscored the toll domestic violence can take on children and families. Authorities are still investigating, and state police asked the public to share photos, video, or other information.

A man killed eight children, including seven of his own, and wounded two women in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Sunday in what police said was a domestic violence shooting across two homes.

The children were 1 to about 12 years old, according to Shreveport Police Department spokesperson Chris Bordelon. One of the wounded women was the mother of the suspect’s children.

Bordelon identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins. He died after a police pursuit that ended in Bossier City, where officers fired at him after he carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint, Bordelon said. Louisiana State Police said no officers were injured and that its detectives were investigating at the request of Shreveport police.

Police said the attacks began before sunrise in a neighborhood south of downtown Shreveport. Investigators said Elkins shot a woman at one home, then drove to a second house, where seven children were found dead inside. An eighth child was found dead on the roof after apparently trying to escape, Bordelon said.

State Rep. Tammy Phelps said some children tried to get out through the back door.

The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office said Sunday it was not releasing the children’s names because their identification was pending. The two wounded women were being treated for serious injuries, police said.

Bordelon said Elkins had been arrested in 2019 in a firearms case. He said police were not aware of other domestic violence issues.
