Nigeria charges 6 with treason in alleged coup plot

Summary

Nigerian authorities charged six people with treason and terrorism over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.

Why this matters

The case is significant in Nigeria, which has not had a coup since returning to democracy in 1999. It also comes amid a broader pattern of coups and attempted coups in West and Central Africa.

Nigerian authorities charged six people, including a retired major general and a serving police inspector, with terrorism and treason over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu, according to The Associated Press.

All six defendants were in custody.

A seventh suspect, former Bayelsa state Gov. Timpre Sylva, was accused of helping to conceal the alleged plot and remained at large.

The Nigerian government said in January that it had foiled a coup attempt and that several military officers would stand trial. Those officers were part of a group of 16 military personnel arrested in 2025 over what military authorities described as “acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations,” allegations that fueled rumors of a coup plot that the government had initially denied.
