Law enforcement and school officials in Onslow County, North Carolina, announced they will increase patrols and enforcement on school bus routes to address drivers illegally passing stopped school buses.
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, Jacksonville Police Department and Onslow County Schools issued a joint public service announcement warning that violations will result in citations, court appearances and associated penalties. Officials said there will be no warnings issued.
“Enough is enough,” the agencies said in the statement, citing risks to student safety.
Officers plan to monitor bus routes with targeted patrols. Drivers who pass a school bus while its red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended will be stopped and cited. All Onslow County school buses are equipped with cameras that can capture violations even when law enforcement is not present.
North Carolina law requires drivers to stop for school buses under the following circumstances:
– On a two-lane road or a two-lane road with a center turn lane: All traffic must stop in both directions.
– On a four-lane road without a median: All traffic must stop in both directions.
– On a divided highway with a median or a four-lane road with a center turn lane: Only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.
Officials urged drivers to remain alert, reduce speed and stop every time a school bus is stopped for loading or unloading.
