Summary

OpenAI bought health data startup Torch, reportedly for $100 million, to support its new ChatGPT Health platform.

Why this matters

The acquisition strengthens OpenAI’s position in health-focused artificial intelligence by incorporating technology designed to unify personal medical data.

OpenAI has acquired health technology startup Torch for an undisclosed amount, the companies said. According to The Information, which cited an unnamed source, the deal was valued at approximately $100 million in equity.

Torch’s four-person team will join OpenAI as part of the acquisition. The startup was developing an application that aggregates a user’s medical information—including data from doctor visits, lab tests, wearable devices, and wellness portals—into what it described as a “medical memory for AI.”

Torch co-founder Ilya Abyzov said on X that the team met while working at Forward Health, a company known for its AI-based medical clinics. Forward shut down in late 2024 after raising over $400 million.

Torch’s technology and personnel will be integrated into ChatGPT Health, a new OpenAI service designed to help users analyze and manage personal health data through the ChatGPT chatbot.
