Pamlico County moves closer to own animal shelter

Summary

Pamlico County officials, animal advocates said Monday they are moving ahead with plans for a county animal shelter.

Why this matters

The project could change how Pamlico County handles animal services, which now depend on one officer and a shared shelter with Craven County. Residents can use this information to follow future county decisions on the proposed shelter.

Pamlico County moved a step closer Monday to establishing its own animal shelter after a Board of Commissioners meeting.

The county now relies on one animal control officer and a shelter shared with Craven County.

The Pamlico Animal Welfare Society has worked since the 1990s to address animal overpopulation in the county. During Monday night’s commissioners meeting, the group moved closer to its goal of helping Pamlico County develop its own shelter.

The organization has worked with local officials on the infrastructure needed for the project. According to Paws President Jackie Smith, the facility could serve as more than a traditional shelter and be a space that benefits the broader community.

Paws board member Mary Hiatt said the project will need continued public attention to move forward.

At the end of Monday night’s meeting, each commissioner made a statement about plans to continue work on the project.

Hiatt and Smith said they expect the effort to take time, but said they were encouraged by the county’s progress.
