Police search for driver in Makiki hit-and-run crash

Honolulu police are investigating a hit-and-run collision that injured a moped rider in Makiki on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred around 8:25 p.m. near the intersection of Piikoi and Lunalilo streets, police said. An unidentified motorist driving northbound on Piikoi reportedly changed from the first lane to the second lane and struck a 41-year-old man riding a moped.

The driver continued north on Piikoi without stopping to provide information or assistance, according to police.

The moped rider, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown onto the roadway. Emergency Medical Services took him to a hospital in good condition.

Speed does not appear to be a factor in the collision, police said. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs were involved.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division at (808) 723-3413.

Police investigate robbery after vehicle crash in Ocean View

Hawaii Island police are investigating a robbery that occurred Friday following a traffic crash in Ocean View.

At 4:15 p.m., Ka‘u patrol officers responded to a reported collision at the intersection of Aloha Boulevard and Lotus Blossom Lane.

According to police, a 67-year-old Ocean View woman was driving a 2008 Toyota sedan east on Aloha Boulevard when the vehicle was struck broadside by a silver 2007 Ford SUV traveling south on Lotus Blossom Lane.

The Toyota driver and two passengers—a 47-year-old woman and an 8-year-old girl, both from Ocean View—sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the 47-year-old passenger exited the vehicle to check on the SUV’s driver. As she approached, a gray pickup truck arrived, and a man exited the truck and assaulted her. He displayed a small handgun and demanded her cellphone, which she handed over.

The man and the woman who had been driving the Ford SUV left the scene in the gray pickup truck, last seen heading south on Lotus Blossom Lane toward Seabreeze Parkway.

The woman who drove the SUV was described as being in her 30s, about 5 feet 4 inches tall, with a heavy build, tan complexion, and reddish-blonde dyed hair. The male suspect was described as about 55 years old, 5 feet 4 inches tall, 160 pounds, bald, clean-shaven, with a dark complexion.

Police believe the pickup truck was an older model two-wheel drive Toyota or Nissan. The license plate number is unknown.

The Ford SUV involved in the collision had been reported stolen in November from a residence on Seabreeze Parkway.

Anyone with information or video surveillance footage from the area is asked to contact Detective Donovan Kohara at (808) 960-3118 or donovan.kohara@hawaiipolice.gov. Anonymous tips may be provided to Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
