Russia launched approximately 400 drones and numerous missiles across Ukraine overnight Monday. This prompted NATO countries, including Poland and Romania, to scramble fighter jets, according to reports.
At least four individuals were killed, and more than two dozen were injured. Strikes impacted various regions such as Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv, according to Ukrainian officials reported by The Associated Press.
According to East2West, Poland and Romania took defensive measures as Russian missile strikes approached their airspace. Poland placed its air defenses on high alert, stating that Polish and allied forces began operations due to the activity of long-range Russian air forces.
Earlier, Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets in response to Russian drones attacking sites near the River Danube, which forms part of the border with Ukraine.
Ukrainian military officials report an intensified offensive along the 750-mile front line, marking hundreds of assaults in recent days. The Institute for the Study of War has indicated that this may signal the start of a long-anticipated Russian offensive.
Ukraine’s air force reported most of the nearly 400 drones launched by Russia were intercepted or disrupted, though some did reach their targets. Russia also launched several cruise and ballistic missiles targeting at least ten locations in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian air force reports.
Russian forces have maintained consistent strikes since their full-scale invasion over four years ago. Past negotiations led by the U.S. have not concluded in a ceasefire, as Russia declined Ukraine’s proposal.
The recent assault follows a Ukrainian attack on Russia’s Baltic port, Primorsk, which resulted in fires at the key export hub, as reported by East2West.
Russian Ambassador to London, Andrey Kelin, warned of severe consequences related to the use of British Storm Shadow missiles by Ukraine, claiming they recently damaged a microelectronics plant in Russia’s Bryansk region, according to East2West.
“The British, without whose participation the use of Storm Shadow missiles is simply impossible, decided to remind everyone of both Ukraine and themselves,” Kelin said. “However, any action has consequences. And for everyone involved in the tragedy in Bryansk, the consequences will be dire.”
