Savannah Approves March 15 for Sunday Alcohol Sales

Summary

Savannah designates March 15 for its annual Sunday alcohol sales.

Why this matters

The decision aligns with local preference for boosting hospitality during St. Patrick's Day festivities, impacting local businesses and tourism.

The City of Savannah will allow alcohol sales on Sunday, March 15.

Georgia law allows municipalities to select one Sunday each year for on-premises sales. According to a survey, 84% of local establishments preferred the Sunday before St. Patrick’s Day.

Savannah City Manager Jay Melder noted that the hospitality industry’s participation is strongest when this authorized Sunday is close to the holiday. The city’s memo detailed that, while another major holiday, July 4, also falls on a weekend this year, establishments largely supported March 15. The city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, with festivities expected over the preceding weekend. The Plant Riverside District’s Shamrocks and Shenanigans event, featuring live music, begins March 13 and will continue through the parade day.
