Space Force Japan command to expand at Yokota base

Summary

U.S. Space Forces Japan said it plans to grow from 20 to 80 personnel and move into a dedicated headquarters at Yokota Air Base.

Why this matters

The expansion shows how the U.S. and Japan are increasing their focus on military space operations as both countries reorganize and add personnel. It also reflects a broader effort to integrate space capabilities into regional defense planning in East Asia.

U.S. Space Forces Japan will add about 60 guardians and move into its own headquarters over the next year, its new commander said Wednesday.

Col. John Patrick took command from Col. Ryan Laughton during a ceremony at Yokota Air Base’s Enlisted Club. The unit, established in December 2024, now has 20 guardians and focuses on communications, space resilience, navigation, and missile defense.

“In the next year, if possible, we will grow to 80 personnel as soon as possible,” Patrick told reporters.

Across Japan, the Space Force has 116 guardians in multiple units. The command has been operating from U.S. Forces Japan headquarters and will soon move into its own building on Yokota.
