On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8-1 to strike down a Colorado law that prohibits licensed mental health professionals from engaging in “conversation therapy” with LGBTQ minors. Judges said the law violated the First Amendment.
“This is another step in the direction of the federal government undermining the health of the LGBTQ population, which has been under attack for the last decade under the Trump administration,” Perry N. Halkitis, Rutgers School of Public Health dean, said.
“This latest decision by the Supreme Court, which upholds conversion therapy as an acceptable form of treatment, runs counter to any scientific evidence and ignores the documented harm that has been evidenced in numerous scientific studies. It is another example of the anti-science agenda and does harm, not good, to the health of people.”
