Tank rupture at Washington plant leaves multiple dead

Summary

Authorities said a ruptured chemical tank at a Washington paper facility caused multiple deaths and critical injuries.

Why this matters

The incident left multiple people dead or injured and prompted an emergency response, while officials said there was no immediate threat to the surrounding community. It also underscored ongoing safety concerns involving industrial chemical tanks in Washington state and Southern California.

A chemical tank imploded and ruptured at a Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Longview, Washington, on Monday, causing multiple deaths and critical injuries, authorities said.

Emergency crews remained at the site in Cowlitz County, about 45 miles north of Portland, Oregon, according to a joint statement from the Longview Fire Department, Nippon Dynawave Packaging, and the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials said the implosion posed “no immediate threat to the surrounding community.” Multiple patients with chemical burns and other injuries were taken to nearby hospitals.

The statement said officials “can confirm fatalities related to the incident” and “multiple critical injuries,” but did not give numbers.

In Southern California, authorities continued monitoring an overheating industrial tank containing methyl methacrylate at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove. Officials said Monday that a worst-case explosion scenario had been ruled out after a crack relieved some of the pressure.
