Apple is developing an AI-powered wearable device, according to a report published Wednesday by The Information. The device, described as a pin worn on clothing, would feature two cameras, three microphones, a speaker, a physical button, and a charging strip.
The report describes the prototype as a thin, flat, circular disc made of aluminum and glass, roughly the size of an AirTag but slightly thicker. One camera would use a standard lens, while the other would offer a wide-angle view, allowing users to capture both photos and video.
The project may represent Apple’s entry into the growing AI hardware sector. OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane said Monday at a Davos event that his company expects to announce its first AI hardware product later this year. Additional reporting has indicated it may be a pair of earbuds.
According to The Information, Apple is aiming to produce 20 million units and could launch the device as early as 2027. The company has not publicly confirmed the project. TechCrunch reported that it reached out to Apple for comment.
The concept of an AI pin has previously been tested in the market. Humane AI, a startup founded by two former Apple employees, released a similar wearable featuring a camera and microphones. The company shut down within two years and sold its assets to HP following underwhelming consumer response.
