The incident injured no firefighters, but it disrupted an emergency response and prompted separate investigations into the attack and the fire. Residents can expect more details as Beaufort police and state investigators continue their work.

City of Beaufort, Town of Port Royal firefighters were attacked by a man with a machete Monday morning, May 11, while responding to a fire alarm at a hotel, officials said.

Just after 8 a.m., Engine Company 4 of the Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department was dispatched to Comfort Suites, 131 Big John Road. Deputy Chief Ross Vezin said the call was upgraded to a structure fire based on information from Beaufort County Dispatch and a sprinkler activation.

When firefighters arrived and entered the hotel room where the fire was located, they were “confronted and attacked by a man armed with a machete,” according to the Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department.

“Our crews remained safe and handled an extremely difficult and dangerous situation professionally and appropriately,” the department said in a social media post.

The firefighters involved were evaluated at the scene by Beaufort County EMS and cleared for duty, according to the department.

Vezin said the fire was small and was extinguished by the sprinkler system. It was unclear how the man was detained.

Master Sgt. Sean Flomer of patrol operations for the Beaufort Police Department said the suspect was taken to a local hospital and then booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center.
