Summary

A new bipartisan bill aims to help military families gain access to affordable diapers and supplies.

Why this matters

This bill addresses the ongoing financial challenges military families face, providing necessary support and improving their economic stability.

Two U.S. Representatives have introduced a bipartisan bill to support military families with access to affordable diapers and supplies. Reps. Valerie Foushee (D-NC) and Ryan Mackenzie (R-PA) introduced the Military Family Diaper Partnership Act, establishing a fund for diaper access. Previously, they introduced the Military Family Diaper Assistance Act, aimed at connecting diaper banks with military installations.

The legislation, if passed, would require the Defense Secretary to partner with the National Diaper Bank Network, allocating $1 million annually from 2027 to 2030, matched by the network for an $8 million total four-year investment. This initiative would support diaper distribution within 20 miles of military bases.

Michelle Schaefer, CEO of the Diaper Bank of North Carolina, highlighted the economic challenges faced by military families, noting that diapers can cost $80-$120 monthly per child and are not covered by assistance programs.

This bill, endorsed by several diaper bank organizations, seeks to provide consistent support to military families, alleviate economic stress, and improve family stability.
