Why this matters

The report identifies the victim and outlines what authorities have confirmed so far, including pending charges against the suspect. It also reflects what remains unknown as the investigation continues.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office identified the woman killed Tuesday in a domestic incident at a Bluffton-area apartment complex as Elisa Palacios, 50, of Bluffton.

Palacios was pronounced dead at Novant Health Hilton Head Medical Center at 2:43 p.m. Tuesday from multiple stab wounds, according to a Wednesday afternoon release from the coroner’s office.

Beaufort County sheriff’s deputies arrived at Vista View Apartments shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday and found Palacios “suffering from stab wounds,” according to a sheriff’s office alert. She was later pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts, the sheriff’s office said.

Department spokesperson Master Sgt. Robert Herlong said the 21-year-old suspect remained hospitalized as of 9 a.m. Wednesday. Deputies planned to book him into jail on warrants already obtained for murder and a felony firearms offense after his release from the hospital.

Lt. Daniel Allen of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said more information about the suspect would be available after he is booked.

As of Wednesday afternoon, officials had not disclosed the relationship between Palacios and the suspect. Herlong said he was unsure whether the stabbing happened in Vista View’s parking lot or inside one of its units.
