Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s ex-leader, reported dead

Summary

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former leader, was reported killed in Zintan by unidentified men, according to family members.

Why this matters

Gaddafi was a key figure during and after his father's rule and his death, if confirmed, could have implications for Libya’s ongoing political instability.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has died, family members said Tuesday. No details were provided on the circumstances of his death.

A social media post by one of his advisers confirmed his death. Separately, a cousin told Libyan media that Gaddafi was killed in his home in the city of Zintan by unidentified individuals.

Gaddafi was once seen as a potential successor to his father, who ruled Libya for more than four decades until his ouster and death during the 2011 uprising. Saif al-Islam had appeared in public during the final days of the Gaddafi government, including addressing supporters in Tripoli on August 23, 2011.

Libyan authorities have not confirmed the reported death, and no group has claimed responsibility.
