President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to discuss Iran, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, and nuclear weapons during Trump’s two-day visit to China ton Thursday and Friday.
It will be his first trip to China since 2017 and the leaders’ first face-to-face meeting in more than six months.
U.S. officials said the two sides are expected to agree to forums to support trade and investment, while China is expected to announce purchases involving Boeing aircraft, U.S. agricultural products, and energy.
Plans for a Board of Trade and Board of Investment could be formally announced, though one official said more work may be needed before they are implemented.
Officials said Trump was expected to press Xi on Iran and Russia. China has ties with Iran and remains a major buyer of its oil.
Officials also said the administration was concerned about advanced AI models being developed in China and wanted “a channel of communication” to reduce potential conflict.
Trump and Xi last met in October in South Korea, where they agreed to pause their trade dispute. In February, the Supreme Court said Trump lacked authority to impose many of his tariffs on imports worldwide. He has said he will pursue some levies through other legal avenues.
