Ukraine said it used interceptor systems to shoot down more than 33,000 Russian drones of various types in March, which Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov described as a monthly record since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday that the range of its long-range strike capabilities had more than doubled since the invasion, from about 630 kilometers (400 miles) to roughly 1,750 kilometers (1,100 miles).
The ministry said that the expanded range had enabled strikes on Russian oil facilities and manufacturing plants linked to Russia’s military effort.
Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces said Tuesday that Ukrainian drones struck a Russian oil refinery at the Black Sea port of Tuapse for the third time this month in an operation involving several defense and security branches. It said two earlier strikes this month destroyed 24 oil storage tanks and damaged four others.
Krasnodar Gov. Veniamin Kondratyev said people living near the Tuapse refinery were being evacuated Tuesday as a precaution. He did not say how many people were evacuated or for how long.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted 186 Ukrainian drones overnight over Russian regions, annexed Crimea, and the Black and Azov seas.
In Russia’s Belgorod region, on the border with Ukraine, Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said a drone attack killed three people and wounded three others.
Ukrainian authorities said Russian drone attacks killed three civilians and wounded five others in Ukraine. Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration, said two people were killed in Chuhuiv. In Kryvyi Rih, officials said a 40-year-old man was killed and five other men were injured.
Another Russian attack on Konotop, in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, cut power and water supplies to the city.
