New Bern man charged after abuse report, deputy hurt

Summary

Craven deputies said a New Bern man was charged after a child abuse report and a struggle that injured a deputy.

Why this matters

The case involves child abuse allegations, an injury to a law enforcement officer, and a related obstruction charge. It informs residents about criminal charges filed by the Craven County Sheriff’s Office and the status of the suspects.

A New Bern man faces child abuse and assault charges after a Craven County Sheriff’s Office investigation, according to deputies.

The sheriff’s office said it received a child abuse report May 4. Investigators later identified 34-year-old Joshua Andrew Forbes of New Bern as a suspect. Deputies said the District Attorney’s Office was consulted, and a magistrate issued warrants May 8.

When members of the Criminal Patrol Bureau went to Forbes’ home to serve the warrants, deputies said he resisted arrest. During the incident, a deputy suffered a broken bone.

Forbes and the deputy were treated and released from CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern.

Forbes was charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer resulting in serious injury. Deputies said he was being held without bond at the Craven County Confinement Facility.

Forbes’ mother, 58-year-old Belina Sue Forbes of Winterville, was charged with obstruction of justice. Deputies said she was accused of interfering in a forensic interview of the child by telling the child what to say.
