Trump backs Paxton in Texas GOP Senate runoff

Summary

Trump endorsed Ken Paxton in Texas’ Republican Senate runoff against incumbent Sen. John Cornyn.

Why this matters

Trump’s endorsement could shape the outcome of a closely watched Republican Senate runoff in Texas. The race also may affect how Republicans allocate money and strategy ahead of the November election.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Republican Senate runoff against incumbent Sen. John Cornyn.

“Ken is a true MAGA Warrior who has ALWAYS delivered for Texas, and will continue to do so in the United States Senate,” Trump wrote on social media.

Paxton and Cornyn advanced to the May 26 runoff after the March 3 primary. Rep. Wesley Hunt finished third.

Cornyn, a four-term senator, has supported Trump’s agenda in Washington, but Paxton has presented himself as a candidate aligned with the Make America Great Again movement.

The runoff had already become a costly contest with implications for Republican Senate strategy. Senate Republican leaders, including Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, backed Cornyn. Scott said “it is a strong possibility we cannot hold Texas if John Cornyn is not our nominee.”
