President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump said Sunday that ABC should remove comedian Jimmy Kimmel after a joke he made Thursday about the White House correspondents’ dinner.
In a monologue imagining himself as the dinner’s emcee, Kimmel said, “Of course, our first lady, Melania, is here.” Pretending to address her, he called her “so beautiful” and added: “Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.” He also joked about the president’s age and health.
The remarks came two days before a gunman breached a security perimeter at the Washington Hilton on Saturday while the president and first lady were inside.
In a social media post Sunday afternoon, Trump called the joke “really shocking” and “something far beyond the pale.” He wrote, “Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC.”
The first lady posted earlier Sunday: “His monologue about my family isn’t comedy. His words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.” She called Kimmel “a coward” who “shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate,” and said he “hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him.” She added: “Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also cited the joke at a briefing Sunday, saying, “This kind of rhetoric about the president, the first lady, and his supporters is completely deranged. It’s unbelievable that the American people are consuming it night after night after night.”
Thursday’s monologue also included an impression imagining Jeffrey Epstein introducing Melania Trump to her future husband. Earlier this month, the first lady publicly rejected rumors that Epstein had introduced her to Trump.
After Saturday’s shooting, Trump said the incident had been “a rather traumatic experience” for his wife. On Sunday’s “60 Minutes,” he said that when they “dropped to the floor,” “She got it. She knew what was happening. She listened.”
