Trump, Schumer trade claims over election effort

Summary

Trump and Schumer traded accusations as court rulings renewed redistricting fights ahead of the midterms.

Why this matters

Redistricting disputes and election messaging can affect control of the House in November. The court rulings in multiple states could reshape congressional maps before voters cast ballots.

As redistricting fights intensified ahead of the midterm elections, Republicans and Democrats accused each other of trying to shape election outcomes.

On Sunday, President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that a new election integrity group announced by Democrats could be used to suppress Republican voters.

“Chuck Schumer is hiring Eric Holder, famous for handing guns to Mexican cartels under the Barack Obama administration, as part of a Democrat-led ‘Election Integrity Group’ that will no doubt try to suppress Republican voters and interfere in our elections,” Trump wrote.

Trump also criticized election lawyer Marc Elias, linking him to past election-related controversies.

Trump’s comments came after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announced a Democratic-led election task force aimed at countering what Democrats described as ongoing concerns about election integrity.

“Donald Trump and the Republicans realized that if the election were held fairly, the likelihood is that they would lose and we would win — that we would take back the House, take back the Senate,” Schumer said.

Republican-controlled states, including Alabama and Tennessee, were also considering redrawing their congressional maps ahead of the midterms after the rulings.
