Ukraine says first guided aerial bomb is combat-ready

Summary

Ukraine said it has produced its first guided aerial bomb and is preparing to deploy an experimental batch.

Why this matters

The announcement signals Ukraine’s effort to build more of its own precision-strike weapons as it faces limits on Western supply. It also reflects how both sides are relying on lower-cost guided bombs for midrange attacks in the war.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said Monday that a Ukrainian company had produced the country’s first guided aerial bomb, a 250-kilogram, winged munition designed to strike targets “dozens of kilometers” behind enemy lines.

Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said in a Telegram post that “The first Ukrainian guided aerial bomb is ready for combat use,” adding that the ministry had bought an experimental batch and was preparing to deploy it.

The bomb is released from an aircraft at altitude and glides to its target using satellite guidance. Unlike a cruise missile, it has no engine. The ministry said the weapon lets aircraft strike from farther away and carries a larger warhead than most drones.
