Writings found in car tied to mosque shooting suspects

Summary

Officials said anti-Islamic writings were found in a car linked to two teens in the San Diego mosque shooting that killed three people.

Why this matters

The case is being investigated as a possible hate crime at the largest mosque in San Diego County. It also has prompted increased security measures across the city.

Anti-Islamic writings were found in a vehicle linked to the two teenage suspects in Monday’s shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego that killed three people, a Department of Justice official with knowledge of the investigation told Reuters.

The suspects were identified as Caleb Vasquez, 18, and Cain Clark, 17, the official said. Police said both were found dead in their car after the shooting, apparently from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Clark’s mother was cooperating with authorities, the Justice Department official said. Police said officers responded after a call from one of the boys’ mothers, who said her son was suicidal and had taken three of her guns and her vehicle.

Police initially went to a local shopping mall and the boy’s school before receiving calls about the shooting at the mosque.

The Islamic Center is the largest mosque in San Diego County and houses Bright Horizon Academy. All students were safe and accounted for after the attack.
